Sustainability

We're all receiving the message, loud and clear, to mitigate against a future global disaster individuals, organisations and government's need to take responsible action. As a local response, the Taunton Protocol has been designed, by experts, to promote a coordinated approach to sustainability. It requires developers and contractors to commit to 10 principles related to the following elements:
- Low carbon development
- Environmental responsibility
- Employment and training
- Design
- Wellbeing
Project Taunton aims to establish the Taunton Protocol as a byword for excellence; recognised both regionally and nationally as a leading example of best practice. Developers signing up to the Protocol will place themselves several steps ahead of current legislation, putting them in a strong position for future regeneration projects.
Referring to Project Taunton’s sustainability principles, Jonathon Porritt says “At long last, people are realizing that delivering substantive economic improvements, does not need to come at the expense of the environment. The Taunton Protocol is a bold and daring vision, with very clear delivery plans. It is not only about climate change and biodiversity, it also looks at enhancing construction skills, use of sustainable, local building materials and the health and wellbeing of residents.” March 2009
Taunton Deane Borough Council’s Executive agreed, in November 2009, to apply the Protocol’s principles to their development land across the whole of the Borough and to recommend it strongly to developers of other sites in the area.
Jonathon Porritt is Founder Director of Forum for the Future and Chairman of the UK Sustainable Development Commission.
