Construction Students Tour Taunton's Regeneration Sites

Classroom theory was brought to life for a group of students from Somerset College when they recently went on a tour of Taunton's regeneration sites. The first year Level 3 construction students on National Diploma and National Award programmes are studying Project Taunton, the £1billion regeneration programme, as part of their local development studies.
The students first had a presentation from Robbie Lowes of Project Taunton who outlined what is happening in the town and the anticipated timescales. This was followed by a tour of the regeneration sites including a visit to Somerset County Cricket Club where the first phases of redevelopment are well under way and work is starting on the new Club Hub. The students also visited Firepool, the site of the former livestock market which will become the new commercial heart of Taunton and where construction is scheduled to start next year.
The visit was a joint initiative between Somerset College and Project Taunton.
Robbie Lowes from Project Taunton said: "This has been a really useful visit, it has allowed us to inform the students about what is happening on their doorstep and we've been interested to hear their views and opinions."
Ian Hodge of Somerset College said: "There's nothing like getting out of the classroom and seeing construction projects actually taking place to bring the theory to life. Project Taunton is particularly relevant due to our interest in sustainability in the construction and civil engineering sector. These students are a mix of some in work on day release and others are on full time courses, all have learnt a huge amount today about Project Taunton and the opportunities it will bring them as individuals and the town as a whole in the future."
