Visitors to Taunton town centre can now enjoy full access to Goodland Gardens with its new direct link from Bridge Street and new footbridge over the Mill Stream.
RG Spiller Ltd who have landscaped the area to a very high standard are now moving their team to the High Street where Phase 2 of that project is due to begin in early February. Taunton Deane’s DLO team carried out some initial clearance work before Christmas in preparation for this next stage which will provide new power outlets for outdoor activities, lighting, trees, planters and drainage channels. Phase 2 works, designed by Reed Holland Associates, is to be funded by the Homes & Communities Agency.
Ian Franklin, Project Director for Project Taunton, said: “We’ve already received some very positive comments about the Goodland Gardens facelift, despite it being a ‘construction site’ for a little while longer. We expect it to be open to the public on Friday 3 February.”
“Local landscape architect, Steve Swan and R G Spiller’s team have done a cracking job and the news that RG Spiller Ltd competed for and won the contract to carry out the next phase of the High Street works is just fantastic!”
Andrew Howard, Managing Director of R G Spiller Ltd commented, “We are delighted to be able to complete the Goodland Garden project ahead of schedule, and the fact that we are able to move our team over to work on Phase 2 of the High Street project is fantastic news. We are excited to be further involved in the works which are improving Taunton Town Centre.”
Cllr John Williams, Leader of the Council, said “The enhancement of Goodland Gardens and upgrade of the riverside walk is all part of bringing that wonderful asset, the River Tone, back into use as an amenity and as part of the heart of the town. It is great to see progress on yet another high quality improvement to our public areas which will continue to make Taunton an attractive place to live, work or visit. My congratulations to the team carrying it out, as we are set fair for delivery of a great job ahead of schedule. That has to be good news.”
