Project Taunton’s progress since 2005:
- Flood protection scheme completed
- Firepool demolition work underway
- Somerset County Cricket Club ground redevelopment
- Somerset Square created
- Castle Green civic square planning consent granted
- Transport initiatives led by Somerset County Council
- Third Way Road designed, approved and ready to go
- Northern Inner Distributor Road designed and approved
- 1,600 new park and ride spaces at Silk Mills and Junction 25 of the M5
- Plans for a major new retail scheme being developed
Much of Taunton’s regeneration programme has been made possible because of central government funds secured for the town by Project Taunton and its partners*. Significantly, Growth Point capital funding, awarded to towns to boost business investment and housing growth.
Cllr John Williams, Chairman Project Taunton Steering Group, says; “I am extremely proud of the progress made to date. This project, which is the largest ever single development contemplated for Taunton, is starting to deliver results in record time - I congratulate all involved for such a successful first five years.”
Ian Franklin, Project Director, Project Taunton, says; “The improvements being made in Taunton are both high quality and sustainable – in other words, it won’t all have to start again in 30 years time. We want people to understand that we’re doing the very best we can to make Taunton a first class place in which to live and work for generations to come.”
