Longrun Meadow Plans Approved

Longrun Meadow includes Taunton’s recently constructed flood defence scheme and extends from French Weir towards Silk Mills, south of the River Tone.

bridgerenderingAn important element of Longrun Meadow is to improve access across Taunton for pedestrians and cyclists. It will provide links between Silk Mills Park and Ride, Frieze Hill, French Weir, Castle School, Somerset College, St Margaret’s Somerset Hospice, Abbeyfield, Heron Drive and the Sustrans cycle network. To enable this to happen three new bridges across the River Tone have been proposed.

Work is due to begin this spring.

The designs were prepared by Taunton landscape architects, Swan Paul Partnership. The design team includes representatives of the Environment Agency, Taunton Deane Borough Council, Somerset County Council, Project Taunton, Engineers, Ecologists and the Tone Schools Partnership.

Ian Franklin, project director of Project Taunton, said: “The approval of the plans for Longrun Meadow is another piece in Taunton’s regeneration jigsaw. This new green area will be a real asset to the town, providing plenty of space for children to play safely, quiet seating areas where people can relax and a haven for wildlife.”
