Tangier consists of a number of brownfield areas to the south of the town extending from the Bus Station, along the River Tone to the Tesco superstore and ultimately French Weir Park. With the majority of the land in public ownership, and with its proximity to the town centre, this area is considered to be perfect for small scale commercial and professional development similar to that in Castle and Corporation Streets. In addition, a regional housebuilder has acquired outline planning consent to build 200 new homes on the former British Gas site on the south bank of the river.
A new major road scheme, The Third Way, linking the A38 (Wellington Road) to Bridge Street and two Park & Ride schemes will ease the flow of traffic to this area significantly, making it a very desirable part of town in which to work and live.
The River Tone is at the very heart of the regeneration. In common with many towns and cities, Taunton has turned its back on the river which was historically the dumping ground for the town’s rubbish and the site of mills and many a small industrial unit.
Major improvements are planned for the River Tone corridor through the heart of Taunton. These include new and improved river walkways and cyclepaths, bridges, tree-lined open spaces and wildlife friendly planting and lighting.
Somerset Waterways Development Trust and the Environment Agency are working with the Project Taunton team to ensure the project is well conceived.
