Our Unique High Street

the_beginningOur aspirations for Taunton High Street are for something special and at the two-day event in October, you told us that this is what you want too.

Bronwen Gwillim, artist, designer and public art consultant is working with Reed Holland Associates on the design which is developing at a rapid pace.  Some of the results will soon be seen as work on Phase 2 which focusses on renewing basic service infrastructure such as lighting, drainage and electricity supplies as well as upgrading the paving, seating and tree surrounds in a section of the street between Bath Place and Crown Walk, is due to begin any day now.

Locally based public artists Anne Smyth and Neil Musson appointed earlier in January (from a national shortlist), are working alongside the architects and contractors ensuring that every opportunity is taken to think imaginatively and to deliver a really inspiring scheme.  They have already come up with exciting proposals for paving, seating, street furniture, and tree planters as well as exploring low energy options for special lighting features bringing the whole street to life at night.

Bronwen says, “This project is taking a really innovative approach to making the most of the High Street ensuring it’s a place of character and quality that people are really drawn to. We have prioritised contemporary design that is simple, functional and well made and that draws upon traditional materials and craft techniques. Local people have put forward some great ideas and with the help of artists and designers we are bringing these ideas to life.”

The designs for the High Street have been developed though public consultation involving over 700 people contributing their ideas at the public event “Street Carpets” and at subsequent meetings with traders and other local groups.

Sounds great, all we need now is more retailers to be in the high street, with most recently Past Times closing it's looking a bit gappy.

Maybe we should hide the M5 signs to Bristol and Exeter as they took got stuck in and developed, while Taunton was still talking about the future they actually built the future.

Whoever is in charge needs to get off their bum and check out other towns and cities and give people what they want, not what they think they want.

Taunton = slowly reaching the 1980's
