Hands up those of you who don’t agree that the paved area between Debenhams and the river needs improving!
Goodland Gardens was landscaped following extensive river channel works in the 1970s (see image) and are badly in need of upgrading. Thankfully, work is due to begin in October to upgrade the open space adjacent to Debenhams, reconfigure the walkway over the Mill Stream and tidy the adjoining green space which stretches behind the newly opened Museum of Somerset. The plans include skateboard friendly hard landscaping, enhanced lighting and seating. It will make a huge difference to people walking and cycling along the south bank of the River Tone.
The mild winter has been a godsend to RG Spiller's Neil Chick and his team and has resulted in the Goodland Gardens landscaping project finishing early.
From today (Friday 27 January) you will be able to enjoy full access to Goodland Gardens with its new direct link from Bridge Street and new footbridge over the Mill Stream.
We're confident you'll love the transformation from dark and dingy to light, bright and accessible. As you know the common theme in all our projects is to make the most of the river.
Despite the recent wet weather the R G Spiller team is beavering away (good description for a riverside location, don't you think?) on site and are making headway with the ramped access from the Tone Bridge on Bridge Street down into the gardens and towards the Mill Stream.
You may also have noticed that pedestrian access around the perimeter is not now available. The construction team were advised by Taunton Deane's Health and Safety officer that the area should be wholly surrounded by safety fencing. We've found a temporary solution which we can maintain until the Castle Green construction team start work at the rear of the Museum.
I popped along to Goodland Gardens on my way to work this morning, introduced myself to R G Spiller’s on-site team and grabbed a photo or two as the first bridge panel was being removed.
