Castle Green

The Castle Green project is about to enter its completion phase. The major part of Castle Green was completed in September and is already being used as a central and spacious events venue in the run up to Christmas. Unless you are staying at the Castle Hotel cars are no longer allowed to drive on this space.

Castle Green Completed

Castle Green, one of the biggest regeneration projects in the heart of Taunton is completed and ready to welcome the public.

Contractors Britannia are ready to hand over the paved and landscaped open space after almost a year on site.

The space has been transformed into an attractive place for people to stroll, sit and chat with friends, have a picnic or enjoy the events that are now being planned.

The old Tarmac has been ripped up and replaced with natural stone paving blocks, shrubs and flowers have been planted and immaculate turf laid.  Trees will be planted later this autumn to add to the landscaping.  Simple and comfortable wooden seating is in place and high spec lighting installed.

Castle Green Enhancement Works - Archaeological Investigations

Castle_Green_market_place_20th_Jan_2012As part of works for the enhancement of Castle Green, archaeological investigations are being undertaken on behalf of and funded by Project Taunton and Taunton Deane Borough Council. The investigations are being carried out by AC archaeology in collaboration with Britannia Construction.

The enhancement works, which comprise part of the Project Taunton regeneration scheme, entails the creation of green spaces and paved areas in Castle Green. Much of the scheme lies within the former precinct of the Medieval Taunton Castle, which is protected as a Scheduled Monument.

The current investigations have recorded lots of disarticulated human bone (skeletons that were disturbed when the moat was constructed around the castle in the medieval period), but so far only one intact skeleton has been found. Analysis of this will tell us such things as the date the person died, how old they were, what their diet was and if they had any diseases that can be seen within the bone.

The Britannia Construction team are on site preparing the area for work to start.   It’s been a long haul and not without its critics but we feel strongly that Castle Green should be restored to its former glory as Taunton’s principle civic space.  It is surrounded by listed buildings and is a scheduled ancient monument encompassing part of the outer bailey of Taunton's medieval castle and the burial ground associated with the Anglo Saxon Minster.
