The Charity Commission
The Charity Commission is the government department responsible for regulating and registering charities in England & Wales. Their Taunton office is one of the Commission's three main locations in the UK, the others being London and Liverpool, with a small office in Newport.

The Commission moved to purpose-built offices in Taunton in 1991, and have become one of the major employers within the town, employing around 170 people.
Neil Robertson, Head of Advice and Orders at the Commission had this to say about operating in Taunton:
"Taunton has been one of the Charity Commission's three main sites since moving part of it's operations from London in '91. Initially about two thirds of the staff came from London. The rest were recruited locally. Currently about 170 people work on the Taunton site.
The Commission has not had any trouble finding the right people, with the skills it needs, in the local labour pool. Staff here work well and there is very little staff turnover. As with any sizeable employer another government department would broaden the range of skills and experience in the labour pool and would be welcomed by the Commission.
The Taunton office has been used several times for developing and successfully testing new ideas and initiatives; for example Taunton was the first of the Commission's three main sites to be fully computerised.
To sum up, the Commission and its staff, find it easy to operate from Somerset and continue to enjoy the quality of life here."
