Clerksroom are a legal support, arbitration and mediation service, with clients across the UK, including the Department for Constitutional Affairs (DCA). The business was established in Taunton in 2001.

They have over 200 barristers on their books and have found a niche market with barristers leaving traditional chambers in Central London (the Inns) to work from home with their administration being undertaken from the Taunton offices of Clerksroom.

Recently the business has been engaged with the Department of Constitutional Affairs (DCA) in terms of the dynamic work they are doing in moving the administration of justice forward, into a modern environment and client focused way. Clerksroom is a major provider of alternative dispute resolution services, which are very much supported by the DCA and the Court Service.

This is what their Chamber Director, Stephen Ward had to say about their choice of Taunton as a location. ‘Our main clients are based throughout the UK and their original expectation was that we would be based in London. Our decision to move to Taunton was based on the exceptional environment, the quality of life and the pleasant people.

So what were the main benefits that Clerksroom found in Taunton?

‘Taunton is a big plus for our business. We found a good quality building at a fraction of the cost of London; good communications - road rail, air and electronics cannot be bettered. We can be in London or Birmingham within two hours by train. We have a fibre optic link on tap through BT Netstar, which backhauls to Cardiff, a major consideration given our office is very e-business orientated with Barristers on our books who live in Alicante, Spain and fly in for cases; so good internet and email access are essential. The availability of parking is another major bonus for us.

Do you see the business remaining in Taunton?

‘Yes. We see our business growing rapidly and substantially in the town.’
