Along the River Tone to Castle Green

The River Tone is the key element linking the regeneration areas and our aim is to make riverfront more accessible and the footpath or cycle route of choice though the town. New business, residential and leisure development facing the river in combination with attractive landscaping will ensure the river has its true status as the civic heart of the town with Goodland Gardens providing a green oasis in which to relax and play.

Finally, plans are being drawn up to reinstate the historic Castle Green as an open space for the public enjoyment of markets, events and outside entertainment. The County Museum team have been successful in their application for nearly £5million of Heritage Lottery funding to update the accommodation and displays in the 12th Century castle which is sited on the northern side of Castle Green.

The museum, which is now closed to the public whilst work is underway, will emerge as the Museum of Somerset in summer 2010. The proposed landscaping of the surrounding area will undoubtedly show the Castle to its best advantage within its historic setting.
